Changes to the process for paying Self-employed individuals

From 1 October 2016 the process for paying self-employed individuals who complete work for SHU is changing.

For one off* pieces of work with a value lower than £1000

If the individual piece of work that is being delivered is under £1000 a purchase order requisition is no longer required.  Instead go to the HR website and complete the Self-Employed Status – Payment Request online form. Detailed guidance is available online.

*A one off piece of work is classed as one piece of work, with a value of less than £1000 in one academic year.

For a piece of work with a value over £1000 (or less than £1000, but more frequent than once a year*)

If the individual piece of work that is being delivered is above £1000 then you must complete a purchase order requisition.  Additionally, if the self-employed individual will be delivering numerous pieces of work (e.g. Deaf Student Interpreter) throughout the academic year that are individually less than £1000, but when totalled together are over £1000 (e.g. 20 x £60 sessions = £1,200) a purchase order requisition will be required.

  • Go to HR website and download the relevant Employed Status Questionnaire (there are templates available for different role types)
  • Attach the template to your purchase order requisition as a pdf and complete your requisition as usual.
