New environmental policy and external audit success

Last month Sheffield Hallam became one of a handful of universities to achieve external accreditation to the 2015 version of the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, following an external audit. We were able to successfully demonstrate that we put managing our environmental impacts at the heart of what we do, to protect the environment now and for future generations.

During the audit we were delighted to receive particular praise for our effective communication methods, with the auditor stating that we were one of the most impressive organisations he has seen in terms of internal communication. He was especially impressed with the Green Champion network and the progress that has been made with this over the past year.

The University is a responsible organisation and has been managing its environmental impacts for many years through the ISO 14001 and ISO 15001 systems. To further support this work we now also have an updated environmental policy for the University.

The new environmental policy outlines our updated strategic environmental management commitments to reduce impacts in areas such as energy and water use, travel, waste, procurement, and the built and natural environment and has been developed to align with the new University strategy.

If you have any questions regarding the policy or the work that the University is doing on environmental management, please contact Katie Stead, Sustainability and Energy Strategy Manager or speak to your local Green Champion
