The inspirational Dr Kate Granger will be attending the event to talk about her experience. Kate is a Specialist Registrar in Geriatric Medicine in Yorkshire; she also has incurable cancer. After undertaking several gruelling rounds of chemotherapy following her diagnosis, Kate decided to stop receiving treatment and concentrate on enjoying a good quality of life.
Since then, she has written two books, and blogs and tweets extensively about living with cancer and, in particular, her experiences as a patient. She launched the “hello my name is” campaign after becoming frustrated by the number of staff who failed to introduce themselves to her when she was being treated. The campaign has been endorsed by several senior nurses at NHS England, including chief nursing officer Jane Cummings and Head of Commissioning Michelle Mello and was mentioned in the Government response to the Francis report.
Many NHS trusts both locally and nationally have taken on the project and embedded the ethos within their scheme of work; Sheffield Hallam will be one of only a handful of universities which will be highlighting the project in the university setting.
