Opening the doors to old and new

Sheffield Hallam is beginning 2016 by opening the doors two new buildings in the city centre.

In January, the former Head Post Office (HPO) opened as the new home to the Sheffield Institute of Arts. The University has taken a long lease on this iconic 19th century building, which has been refurbished to provide space for teaching in subjects including fine art, product design, graphics and fashion. The old Post Hall has also been transformed into an exhibition and showcase space.

At present only the main block of the building, block A (facing onto Flat Street) is in use. Work continues on the buildings surrounding the courtyard, with work due to finish completely later this year.

We have also taken possession of Charles Street, which will house the Sheffield Institute of Education, bringing together our teacher education provision and education research as well as general teaching and social spaces.

Staff and students began using the Charles Street lecture theatre this week, although other areas of the building will not be opened up immediately. This is to allow for the planned fit out to take place, including IT to be installed and commissioned and signage completed. Staff from the Faculty of Development and Society will begin to move into Charles Street on 21 March with full teaching beginning after Easter, on 4 April.

Tours of both the Head Post Office and Charles Street are being organised over the coming weeks, and these will be advertised via eview and on the Future Spaces blog.
