IT security: What is malware?

Malware (malicious software) comes in many different forms and disrupts or damages a computer’s operation, gathers sensitive or private information, or gains access to private computer systems.

It may also include the following:

  • Virus – this can transfer from one computer to another, spreading infections between devices
  • Worm – this can replicate itself over and over within a device
  • Trojan – malware that gives an unauthorised user access to a device
  • Spyware – this sends browsing information and computing habits back to a server that gathers and saves data
  • Adware – allows popup ads and links on a browser, potentially taking over a user’s Internet browsing.

Further information regarding virus protection can be found on the IS&T Help Pages or by contacting IT Help.
