A film commissioned for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and directed by a Sheffield Hallam professor will be shown on national television this weekend.
From Scotland with Love is a feature-length documentary about 20th century Scotland and is made entirely of Scottish film archive. Described as a poetic film with no narration or interviews, it explores themes such as love, loss, work, leisure, war and protest and will be broadcast on BBC 4 on Sunday.
Virginia Heath, award-winning director and Sheffield Hallam’s professor of film collaborated with renowned singer/song-writer King Creosote – aka Kenny Anderson – to create an original soundtrack that tells the stories of the film’s silent characters.
The 75-minute feature, funded by Creative Scotland and the BBC, will be screened in front of 10,000 people accompanied by a live performance of the film score as part of the Commonwealth Games Culture Festival at Glasgow Green on 31 July. A second screening and performance will also take place at the Barbican, London in September.
Virginia’s film proposal was chosen from hundreds of applicants, all bidding for the opportunity to mark the Commonwealth Games celebrations.
It was first broadcast on BBC Scotland in June and received a host of positive reviews in the Guardian, Scottish Herald, in several music publications and on social media.
