Quest for the perfect man-made material – a story of superpower.
Tuesday 13 May, arrive at 6pm for a 6.30pm start Room 9130 Cantor Building, City Campus
The discovery of new materials has fuelled the evolution of mankind, from the simple iron implements of ancient humans to metal alloy aeroplanes and silicon transistor based microcomputers and microdevices in smart phones, materials have been setting the scene for the development of our society.
The quest continues as we reach the limits of tailoring the crystalline make-up of materials down to the atomic level. In our research we use megawatts of power to break down solid materials to their atomic constituents and mix different materials and reconstitute them to create a new structure. This new structure has unique properties that can be tailored to improve the lifetime of aero-engine blades or stability of biomedical implants.
This lecture will focus on what has been achieved so far and where materials research may go from here.
Places are free and include light refreshments, but must be booked in advance.
