University officials have broken the ground at the site of what will become a landmark in education provision across the city, the new Sheffield Institute of Education.
The new building in Charles Street is part of a £110m investment programme at Sheffield Hallam University and will bring together teacher and workforce education together with two research centres, the Centre for Science Education and the Centre for Education and Inclusion Research.
The Sheffield Institute of Education will have around 157 full academic staff, more than 5,000 students, and a turnover of around £25 million.
Its remit includes undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, teacher education, research and knowledge transfer.
By September 2015, the Institute will be based in the University’s new £30million development on Charles Street in Sheffield. The building features a central covered walk-way and a concertina-effect walkway designed by Corin Mellor.
Professor John Leach, Pro Vice Chancellor for Development and Society, cut the turf on the site watched by Mark Swales, director of estates and facilities at Sheffield Hallam and Sheffield Institute of Education director, Professor Sam Twiselton.
