A new exhibition featuring some of the oldest art in Sheffield has opened to the public, marking 170 years of art and design at Sheffield Hallam University.
The University’s Sheffield Institute of Arts is holding an exhibition of work by some of its oldest and most successful alumni to commemorate 170 years of art and design at Sheffield Hallam.
Started by artist Benjamin Haydon in 1843, the Sheffield School of Art was originally created to provide skilled designers from the artisan class to support Britain’s industry in its fight against overseas competition. The first few classes were held in a public bath – what is now the Bath Hotel on Victoria Street.
The exhibition runs at Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery until Friday 20 December. For more information visit www.shu.ac.uk/sia/gallery
