Members of the Mexican community in Sheffield are coming together to celebrate the lives of departed loved ones as part of traditional Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ festivities.
The ‘Día de Muertos’ festival has been organised by lecturers from Sheffield Hallam, the University of Sheffield’s students’ union, Museums Sheffield and local community groups. Free activities will take place at venues around the city from 30 October, culminating in an evening of music, dance, readings and food, at Sheffield Hallam’s Cantor Building on Saturday 2 November.
The festival includes a traditional Mexican altar, which is decorated with brightly-coloured sugar skulls, flowers, handcrafts, and photos and memorabilia from deceased friends and family.
The week of celebrations includes a free, public lecture on the origins and meaning of Dia de Muertos, by Dr Elizabeth Baquedano of University College London. To find out more about the festival visit www.facebook.com/DayOfTheDeadSheffield
