David Mellor: Steel and Light marks the 50th anniversary of the late designer’s seminal cutlery range Symbol, to coincide with the 2013 Centenary of Stainless Steel celebrations across his home city of Sheffield.
This free exhibition is being held in the Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery in the Cantor building at City Campus until November 3. The exhibition, due to be opened officially this evening by Professor Sir Christopher Frayling, will take visitors on a journey, starting with Symbol, Mellor’s first mass-produced cutlery design.
The Royal Designer for Industry, is best known for his cutlery and metalwork design, but he also worked on other famous projects including redesigning the national traffic light system in the 1960s.
Born in Sheffield, he began his metalwork training at Sheffield College of Art, one of Sheffield Hallam University’s founding colleges. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University.

The exhibition is free and weekdays from 10am to 5pm (8pm on Wednesdays).
