This featured image is a wordle built from the interpretations provided by our artists. Each of our students are asked when they submit their artwork for display, to provide an interpretation of their project to guide visitors who view their work. Part of every interpretation includes the inspiration for the project. The words in this image portray just a selection of the main topics, thoughts and ideas that inspired our students in their work. We hope that by promoting student art in the Learning Centres, we too can inspire students, staff and visitors alike.
Furniture design for the international market
Furniture designer and SHU Graduate, Daniel Schofield, has received an order from a Hong Kong fashion and lifestyle store for his Department Table. The Lane Crawford buyer spotted Daniel’s innovative table at a design festival in London last year.
Another of Daniel’s designs recently won the furniture category of the New Design Britain Awards. His wall mounted desk with a secret storage space, entitled ‘Shifty’ was given the top prize by judges at the London awards. The design has also received interest from a major high end London retailer and Daniel is now in discussion with the store.
The Department Table is designed to offer different areas for the various objects found on coffee and side tables. The design offers a creative solution in keeping spaces free of clutter, while offering more accessible and accommodating surfaces for people to interact with.
Daniel graduated from Sheffield Hallam with a BA (Hons) in Furniture Design, and went on to develop his own company, Daniel Schofield Design, through the University’s entrepreneurial business incubator, The Hatchery. Daniel is based at Yorkshire Art Space at Persistence Works in Sheffield.
Daniel’s designs are also featured in the Art in Adsetts 2012 exhibition and images of the Department Table and another of his pieces are available to view on level 5 of the Learning Centre.
