The meteoric rise of social media has made fundamental changes to our lives, (Kolbitsch & Maurer 2006; Wodzicki et al 2011.) Yet the perceptions of its place in higher education differs widely between students and academics alike.  The use of social media within higher education is becoming increasingly popular (Manca and Ranieri; 2016) and this workshop will explore the use of several social media with an undergraduate degree course for pre-service teachers.

Wilson (2013) is clear that social media in higher education is not simply about a use of technology. Several key benefits have been identified such as the use use of social media to support knowledge creation Kassens-Noor (2012) and motivation, Moody (2010).  The workshop will demonstrate a variety of approaches that have been undertaken to enhance these benefits and an exploration of their impact.

An integral aspect of pre-service teacher education is the development of a professional presence, Scanlon (2011). Fenwick (2016) suggests e-professionalism is term for significant consideration. This suggests that the use of social media goes far beyond its use for administration or marketing purposes and that both students and academics could benefit from a creative and innovative use of these tools.

The workshop is to comprise of micro activities to include:

I can’t use an emoji… I’m an academic!

Practical solutions for student communication and tutor voice in the use of social networks. Optimising the use of Twitter to create positive tutor / student relationships.
