Robotics and AI for health and social care

Introduction

The UK government and parliament (2018 UK Parliament’s POST report on Robotics in Social Care) have identified the need to support research and innovation in the field of robotics and AI for health and social care. This is in response to the expected growth in needs for the ageing population, and the contribution AI and robotics technologies can offer.

This collaborative workshop will take place at the Alan Turing building at University of Manchester.

About the event

This workshop aims to achieve a shared awareness of the strengths and complementarity of UK and International projects and activities in this field, to identify the main research challenges, and foster interaction and collaboration. International experts will also be invited to share good practice and further support international collaboration.

Academic speakers include experts already involved in assistive robotics and AI projects, from the UK, EU and Japan. It will also have talks from experts in ethics and law for healthcare technologies and for responsible research and innovation. Participants will comprise stakeholders from charities, industry, and policy makers.

Invited speakers include:

  • Yoshio Matsumoto
  • Alessandro Di Nuovo
  • Katrin Solveig Lohan
  • Amelia DeFalco
  • Farshid Amirabdollahian
  • Samia Nefti-Meziani
  • Sanja Dogramadzi

Workshop on Robotics for Healthy Living and Active Ageing @ IEEE ROMAN 2019

Workshop on INTERNET OF INTELLIGENT ROBOTIC THINGS FOR HEALTHY LIVING AND ACTIVE AGEING: WHERE WE ARE AND FUTURE TRENDS @ The 28th IEEE International Conference on Robot & Human Interactive Communication
14 Oct, 2019
Le Meridien, Windsor Place, New Delhi, India

It was a great half day workshop at IEEE ROMAN 2019. I should thank my co-organisers – Dr. Laura Fiorini, Dr. Filippo Cavallo (SSSA), Prof. Yasuo Okabe (Osaka), Prof. Alberto Nunzio Borgese (Milan), the invited speakers Dr Silvia Rossi (Naples) and Prof. Jorge Dias, (Khalifa), and all the other participants for the many interesting presentations and discussions.

The Proceedings Book can be downloaded by clicking on this link.

I had also the opportunity to present and discuss with the audience the results of the CATHI project:

The workshop is linked to a Special Issue in MDPI robotics, which is open to submission also for other authors: https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/biorobot

Sheffield Robotics Open Lab

Description

As part of UK Robotics Week, Sheffield Robotics will be hosting open labs on Tuesday 25th June 2019 (2pm – 4pm)

The Sheffield Robotics Lab will be open to staff, students and members of the public. Sheffield Robotics: Robot Foundry (Floor B, Pam Liversidge Building, Newcastle Street).

At the Robot Foundry, Sheffield Robotics researchers will be on hand to discuss the latest robotics research and give demonstrations from our wide range of projects. This includes my projects: NUMBERS, CATHI, CARER-AID.

Robotics in Social Care –

POST (Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology) has published an interesting note that reviews evidence on the impact of robotics on the costs and quality of social care and its workforce, and explores the main ethical, social and regulatory challenges to its use in social care. Full text here.

“According to the National Audit Office, between 2012 and 2020, the UK Government has, or plans to, invest over £300 million in RAS research. The European Commission is also investing €700 million between 2014-2020 in partnership with the robotics industry and academia, which is expected to yield a total investment of €2.8 billion.

It has been suggested that robotics can provide social and cognitive assistance to care receivers, as well as physical assistance to both caregivers and care receivers. Evidence on the effectiveness of this technology shows some positive findings, although the newness of the technology means that current research is limited. Questions have also been raised over the ethical, social and regulatory challenges to its use.”
