What should I do when I publish a paper, or when I am at the end of my project? A checklist

When you are about to publish a paper or approaching the end of your project, there are a number of things you should think about.

Checklist

Select what data you will keep.
If you have any paper data that needs preserving, decide whether you will digitise these data and add them to your digital files, or whether you will deposit them in their paper form in the SHU Research Data Archive (SHURDA).
Choose a repository to preserve your digital data.
Decide how and on what terms your data will be made available to third parties, keeping in mind any ethical, commercial and contractual constraints to your data. Also see SHU guidance on restrictions to openness (pdf).
Make sure that the data is appropriately documented, taking into account any requirements from your repository of choice.
Make sure that your data is in the appropriate file formats that allow for long-term preservation, taking into account any requirements from your repository of choice.
Register your data in the SHU Research Data Archive (SHURDA) if you decide not to deposit your data in SHURDA.
Make sure to include a data availability statement in your published paper.
