Student Wellbeing Summer Service

From Monday 8th June – Friday 25th September (end of Freshers’ Week), Student Wellbeing will operate a reduced service for the summer as follows:

  • Assessment appointments (bookable on the day) on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday at City Campus only
  • Pre-booked appointments at Collegiate Campus on demand
  • Wednesday late night reception has stopped until term starts in September

Careers Bootcamp for International Final Year Students

  • Tuesday 23 June, 10am-2pm
  • The Careers & Employability Centre, Hallam Square, City Campus

We want you to feel professional to please note the dress code: smart/business wear preferred!

Here’s a sample of the topics which international bootcampers will all take part in:

  • hearing what employers really look for
  • job searching
  • CV review, drafting up a real application form

Opportunity for feedback in both small groups aswell as individual support to reflect and write a useful career action plan.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Suitable ONLY for 2014-15 Final year ‘International’ students who DO clearly know what kind of sector/industry or job/role they are looking for – due to the types of vacancies this workshop will focus you towards.

For students who are unclear as to what career path to follow we suggest instead that you book a 1:1 Careers Guidance appointment via the Careers and Employability Centre Tel 0114 225 3752. We are also offering a separate workshop for ‘UK/Home’ final year job hunters 16-18 June.

SHU GoGlobal blog competition

Deadline to enter Friday 26 June 2015

Share your experience of going global to inspire others and you could win an iPad mini.

The SHU GoGlobal blog competition is to create an online blog about your experience of internationalising while being a student at Sheffield Hallam University. Internationalising is the process of gaining an understanding of other cultures and developing a global outlook.

The brief is to create an online blog which records the best stories from your time at Sheffield Hallam or your study/work experience abroad and the impact the experience has had on you and your future.

Learning centre skills workshops for June 2015

Our learning centres run a range of skills workshops that are open to all Sheffield Hallam students to help you develop the skills you need for effective university study. There’s no need to book – just come along and join in.

Academic skills workshops

The programme of academic skills workshops runs regularly at Adsetts and Collegiate learning centres.
The schedule for June 2015 workshops starts on Monday 8th and will include sessions on

  • Undergraduate dissertation proposals – how to write it
  • Critical writing – how to shape your writing and focus on your critical voice
  • Literature reviews: getting started – how to critique
  • Reflection / reflective writing – what it’s all about
  • Critiquing a research paper – how to approach it

Move to the Beat for Carers Week!

This week is Carers Week, an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

As part of this event, there will be a fun event taking place in Hallam Square, just outside the Owen building. This event is called ‘Move to the Beat’ and is an exciting, open-air drumming and dance workshop for carers of all ages as well as the general public.

Our cross-cultural peer mentoring scheme helps new students settle into university life and meet friends from around the world.

Why you should become a mentee or mentor

This is a great opportunity to

  • get to know someone through a one-to-one supportive mentoring relationship
  • develop your cultural awareness and learn about different traditions
  • attend social activities and regular soft skills training with other members
  • prepare for work in diverse organisations and add to your CV
  • gain eligibility for the Hallam Award which is recognised by employers

Additional support

You will also be allocated to a learning set – a small, intimate group of mentees or mentors of different nationalities which enables you to gain a wide range of perspectives. You can discuss challenges and share helpful advice during your time on the scheme.

Summer of Fun in Sheffield

We have organised over 50 events, trips and activities this summer which will help you explore the UK and the local area.  Our day trips are open to all current students and include visits to  York, Cambridge, Newcastle and the beautiful seaside village of Whitby.  Most of the trips are only £10 and can be bought from the Hubs from 2.00pm on Monday 8th June.

We have also organised a number of free ‘explore Sheffield’ events which will help you meet new friends and discover new places in the City.

All activities are in the ‘Summer Of Fun’ booklet which is available from Student Services Centre on level 5 of the Owen Building.
