MindfullySTRONG, an integrated mindfulness and strength training programme designed for people who wish to become physically and mentally fitter, is the latest programme to be delivered from our new Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC).
Delivered and developed by Dave Hembrough, a strength and conditioning coach in the Department of Sport and Physical Activity, the programme offers participants a combination of physical activity, meditation and mindfulness. Speaking about MindfullySTRONG, Dave said, ‘Inactivity-related diseases and mental health challenges are real-world problems that affect a lot of us. Our programme brings together practical mindfulness activities, associated philosophies and structured physical training. All activities are mindful – unlike most exercise programmes, which are often mindless. The programme has received national recognition and was shortlisted last year for a mental health award with the Sport and Recreation Alliance.’
And how do the classes work?
‘Each class is structured with some group discussion and a short mindful movement warm up,’ Dave continued. ‘This is followed by a strength circuit that is scaled to suit the ability and experience of each individual. The sessions then end with a cool down and guided meditation. We also incorporate social elements through peer support, where participants are encouraged to support each other though their journey.
‘MindfullySTRONG is a great way to become fitter and healthier for those of us not used to regular structured training. It is also suitable for those who have previously participated in mindfulness or physical activity to a reasonable level. MindfullySTRONG is an open, friendly and enjoyable way to develop personally, physically, and mentally.’
Extracts from participant testimonials:
‘I hope I’ve expressed my gratitude to Dave and everyone else involved in developing MindfullySTRONG. I’m sure there are many people who have inputted lots to it. I think it’s a brilliant combination . . . and a great name as well. It’s such a good idea having people join for different reasons. Personally, I wouldn’t have done it unless it had the mindful element. People are very respectful and supportive all along the way. I do feel as if it’s changed my life because I just feel so different now…it feels like this has been the anchor and I’m thinking now that ageing doesn’t just have to be the end of it.’ – Ruth
‘I think the mindful movement took me by surprise as to how useful it was. Two things especially cracked it for me. One was the 8 pieces of brocades and the other one was the shaolin walking. I thought if I, the ultimate sceptic, can get something from that, then you know, maybe there’s something in it.’ – Simon
‘The programme has made me not only more positive, but also able to say ‘yes’ to more things. It’s changed that mindset because before I’d think about things rather than doing them. So, I’ve signed up for a Sparta race, which is a bit like an obstacle race. My mindset is now “Do you know what? You should just go and do it. Go and do it, enjoy it and just find out what happens.”’ – Nikita
