Culture Connect is our cross-cultural peer mentoring scheme that helps new students settle into university life and meet friends from around the world.

Why you should become a mentee or mentor
It’s a great opportunity to

  • get to know someone through a one-to-one supportive mentoring relationship
  • develop your cultural awareness and learn about different traditions
  • attend social activities and regular soft skills training with other members
  • reflect on your learning and monitor your own behaviour
  • prepare for work in diverse organisations and add to your CV
  • gain eligibility for the Hallam Award which is recognised by employers

Additional support 

You will also be allocated a Super Mentor and a mentoring group – with whom you can discuss challenges and share helpful advice during your time on the scheme. Your group will be made up of different nationalities which enables you to gain a wide range of perspectives.

Conversation Club

If you would like to meet people from around the world
and make new friends – Conversation Club is the place to
be!

Our first Conversation Club of the year is always very busy and  full of students from a whole host of different countries. We have activities and ice breakers designed to get you talking and find out about your fellow students.

You’ll receive free refreshments and snacks so come along – you never know who you might meet! This session is on Wednesday 28 September in Hallam Hall, Level 6 of the Owen building from 5–6.30pm.

*There’ll be a Halloween special on 26 October which will
be in Owen 1025, City Campus.

Christ Church Fulwood – afternoon tea

Our friends at Christ Church Fulwood are hosting an English afternoon tea with cakes, games and English conversation.

Afternoon tea is an old and long-held tradition in England, dating back as far as the 1840s as a mini-meal to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner.

In Britain today, it is enjoyed as a treat or to celebrate special events. It usually includes finger sandwiches, scones, cakes and a pot of loose leaf tea, brewed to compliment the food.

Christ Church Fulwood will be hosting their afternoon tea on Sunday 25 September at 4–6pm, meet at the main University entrance. There’ll also be a short presentation about the Christian faith.

Employability

British Council China Internship Programme

The British Council internship Programme is designed to give young talent in the UK opportunities to gain hands-on experience and improve their employability following graduation.

The programme would enable you to work in the British Council‘s China office, working on projects that add value to the organisation and help to give you an insight into working for a global organisation.

This is a paid opportunity and applications close on the 26 September, so you don’t have long to apply! This really is a fantastic chance to set your CV aside from other graduates, and gain some brilliant invaluable experience.
