The benefits
Did you know there are students from over 100 countries at Sheffield Hallam? Joining Culture Connect is the perfect way to make friends, improve your communication skills and learn about different perspectives.
Get valuable volunteering experience for your CV and stand out to future employers. Benefit from one-to-one mentoring, a learning set, social activities and training. This will develop your intercultural skills and ability to work in diverse teams, which is important in today’s globalised workplace.
Who can join
All students are welcome to apply – from any course, level of study, faculty and nationality (UK and international). There is a formal selection process.
Mentees
Are you a new student? Need help settling into university life and Sheffield culture? Feeling homesick? Or simply want to find out about social activities to make friends and have fun?
During your first year here, you can share your aspirations and concerns with your mentor. We will match you with someone who’s been a new student and understands what it’s like to start at a new place.
They may be from a different country, which is an opportunity to discuss cultural differences and broaden your knowledge of the world.
Mentors
Are you an experienced student, who has adapted well to university life? Perhaps you have taken part in extracurricular activities alongside your studies?
As a mentor you will help a new student feel at home by creating a friendly environment for them to discuss their hopes and worries. You will pass on your knowledge of university services and the local area, to help them integrate into the community.
Super mentors
Have you taken part in Culture Connect before? We are looking for Super Mentors to support new members, coordinate learning sets and help with training.
