Spanish and Chinese native speakers required for study

Spanish and Chinese native speakers are required for a study organised by Gary Dicks, a PhD student and demonstrator in Psychology.

The study involves reading and responding to English words from a computer screen while connected to an EEG (electroencephalography) machine in order to investigate the sequence of brain activity associated with orthography (spelling/form) and phonology (sound) during reading.  You will receive a £20 high-street voucher in return for your participation.

What is the criteria to take part?

  • 18 years of age or over
  • Right-handed
  • Native Spanish

OR

  • Native Chinese
  • English as second language
  • IELTS of 6.5 or higher
  • No language/learning/neurological disorders

Please note: EEG requires special conductive gel on the head that has to be washed out (facilities are provided for this) but the procedure is entirely non-invasive.

If you would like to participate or would like more information, please email Gary at g.dicks@shu.ac.uk.

A big congratulations to Jessica Neves from Brazil for her winning blog entry! Jessica wins an iPad mini.

‘Studying and working in Sheffield Hallam gave me so many skills that now I am so much more confident in life. My English is so good now. When you think about it: How was I was capable of having a boyfriend from Germany? As he said to me one time: “I never thought that I would fall in love with someone that didn’t speak my home language.” We talk and understand each other so well that we have no problem with communication. You wanna know why? Keep reading this blog!!’ Jessica stated in her blog.
