To help you settle into the UK and meet other students, we have arranged a number of social activities and events. All the activities are free unless otherwise stated.

ISC Marketplace – market and second hand sale

Do you have any unwanted items (clothes, books, CDs – anything!) in a good condition which you would like to sell? Would you like a space to sell something you have made (jewellery, art, crafts etc)?

Or do you just like having a look around second-hand shops and markets and finding a bargain?  If so, then the International Standing Committee Market Place is for you!

If you are interested in selling your goods/second hand items, you will need to sign up first.  To do this, contact Elisha on 07716 703648.  Further details here.

Ice Skating

Meet outside the main University entrance

Whether you are an accomplished ice skater or have never tried it before, come along – everybody is welcome. Please bring your SHU Card to get the cheaper student rate. Cost: £7

Beatles Museum/Liverpool

Meet outside the main University entrance

Roll up for the Magical Mystery Tour, a trip to the cosmopolitan city of Liverpool including tickets to the Beatles Museum.

A Walk Back Into The Shadows of Old Sheffield Town

Meet at the university main entrance

Local historian Ron Clayton will bring Sheffield alive with stories of phantoms of the Great Sheffield flood and spooky tales that will make your hair stand on end. Cost: £5

Trip to Edinburgh

Meet outside the HUBS

Our two-day trip includes transport, accommodation for one night in a city centre hostel and admission to Edinburgh Castle. Tickets must be bought in advance from the HUBS. Cost: £65

Handball Taster Session

Pearson Building Sports Hall, Collegiate Campus

Come and try Handball in a relaxed and friendly environment in this session for people who are beginners or want to know more about the sport.

There will be coaches to explain the rules of handball and show you some of the techniques.

No need to book, just turn up with your SHUcard.

Monday 24 November, 5.00pm – 7.00pm
Experience British Culture

Heartspace, City campus

Join us for an evening of British culture including music, games and drama.  You must buy your tickets by 1.00pm on Thursday 20 November from Chef Hallam (level 6), the cost includes a traditional British meal (bangers and mash + a vegetarian option). Cost: £2

Meet at the Crucible Corner

Don’t miss the Christmas panto – a traditional evening of fun held in theatres across the UK. Please buy your tickets from Student Services Centre (City Campus) by Monday 17 November. Cost: £12

Sunday 7 December – 8.00am
Lincoln Christmas Market Trip

Visit England’s biggest Christmas market in the beautiful and historic city of Lincoln. There will be over 250 stalls set against a backdrop of the beautiful Cathedral.

The Pizza Game – ICE CLUB XTRA

Wednesday 12 November

Our ICE CLUB XTRA sessions are open to all students who want to improve their employability skills.

This is a fun business simulation game where in small teams you will be running a virtual Pizza Takeaway business.

You will be asked to make decisions on all aspects of the business including the price and quality of your pizza and its marketing strategy.

Thursday 20 November

You are warmly invited to this fascinating talk by local business man and Sheffield Hallam graduate Jonathan Drury. Jonathan is the Managing Director of Savvy Foods which produce an exciting luxury range of pure and energy promoting spreads.

Jonathan is coming to Sheffield Hallam University to talk about his career to date and to give a candid insight into his business covering marketing, logistics and product development.

Ever wondered what Bonfire night is about?  Helen who comes from Fawkes’ home town, will tell you about its history before we all take the tram to the After Dark event at Don Valley. Expect a huge bonfire, spectacular fireworks and live music.

Innovation Award Round 1 Application Deadline31st October!

The Innovation Award is funding grants enabling students to set up a social enterprise – an enterprise/ business that makes a difference to people’s lives, the local community, or the environment.

Omani Cultural Event and Fashion Show

Friday 24 October at 5.00pm – 7.00pm
Heartspace Cafe, Level 2, Surrey.

Hajar Alruzeiqi is a Msc Managing Global Business Student at Sheffield Hallam University and a fashion designer in her home country of Oman. She has designed many beautiful clothes and will be displaying her designs at a FREE event at Sheffield Hallam University.

Come along to see her gorgeous designs in a fashion show and find out a little bit about the country of Oman and its culture.

Snacks and drinks will be served after the event.

Deadline approaching for peer mentoring scheme

Would you like to apply for our new volunteer peer mentoring scheme called Culture Connect? It will help you to meet people from different countries, develop your cultural awareness and gain valuable experience for your CV.

Your commitment

The scheme is very flexible around your studies. You will  meet your mentee/mentor a minimum of 4 times from October to April. You will receive an induction to ensure you get off to a good start, then there will be regular optional employability skills training and networking events to meet wider participants on the scheme. By taking part in Culture Connect, you will be eligible to apply for the prestigious Hallam Award.

Would you like to apply to become a mentor (student helping)?

You will help mentees settle into university life and gain volunteering experience for your CV. Ideal candidates will be familiar with university services and will have taken part in extracurricular activities.

Would you like to apply to become a mentee (student being helped)?

You may be a new international students who would like to learn about other cultures, adapt to life in the UK and improve your language skills.

You may want to discuss

  • ways to meet people from different countries
  • British culture and differences from your home country
  • extracurricular activities and community events
  • small talk and making friends
  • other places to get support

More student videos and case studies 

Previous participants on the scheme described mentoring as ‘learning through sharing’. Both mentees and mentors reported improving their cultural awareness, time management and communication skills. As well as gaining volunteer experience.
