Work While You Study Fair

Coming up is the fantastic Work While You Study Fair from the Careers team!

If you fancy earning some extra cash while you study, getting some vital experience to get you ahead of the pack and meeting some top employers then this is the event for you.

Every year the fair helps students get in contact with employers looking for motivated and enthusiastic  people like you: what opportunities will you find? Only one way to find out!

The fair will be held in the Careers and Employability Centre (just outside the main entrance to the Owen building) on February 24. Check out the Careers Central site on shuspace for more details.

Want to work in the UK after your studies?

Would you like some visa advice? If yes, then book a place on our Working in the UK after studies workshop.

We will look at all the possible visa routes for international graduates into full time work including:

  • Tier 2 Scheme
  • Tier 1 graduate entrepreneur
  • Tier 5

The workshop will also focus on how to improve your employability and how you can make the most out of your time at Sheffield Hallam University. We will explain the visa rules and how to maximise your chances of success.

Go Global Week

Go Global Week is part of SHU GoGlobal – a project for students who want to meet new people, experience other cultures, develop their global skills and potentially gain life-changing eWeekGoGlobalxperiences.

Students’ Union Activites and Events

The Students Union have organised a range of events for you to get involved, these include:

Balloon Ventures:

Our 6 week international work placement opportunity ‘Balloon Ventures’ has opened for 2016.  The programme enables successful students to fly out to Kenya for 6 weeks to work with ambitious Kenyan entrepreneurs to grow businesses that change lives. Students can choose from Kenya, Ghana, Uganda or the Philippines. The Students’ Union pays £1,000 towards the trip and the students have to come up with creative ways to fundraise for the other £995. Applications are now open and the deadline is 10th February. For more information click here.

Innovation Award:

The Innovation Award is a funding opportunity for Sheffield Hallam University students and recent graduates to start or develop their own social enterprise. Students can apply for up to £500 through our Start Up Award to test out a business, or they can apply for up to £3,000 through the Grow It Award to develop an established business idea. Applications open on the 1st February and the deadline is the 9th March. For more information and previous case studies click here.

Skills Fest, 1st – 5th February 2016

Skills Fest is a week dedicated to employability and skills development workshops events and trips with a festival vibe. During the week students’ will be able to find out about the opportunities available to them whilst they are at university to enhance their employability. During the weeks students can expect a range of interactive and engaging workshops around CV’s, and interviews, entertainment, FREE food and drink, games and competitions and more…Find out more about the events during Skills Fest here.

Women in Leadership Conference: Thursday 4th February 2016,  3-7pm

An afternoon of speakers, workshops and discussions aiming to support women students to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence to take up leadership opportunities! Students will have the opportunity to hear from women who have excelled to leadership positions in politics, business, NUS and more locally in the Students’ Union. Students will also have the chance to develop practical skills in workshops on leadership and self-care. Throughout the afternoon, they’ll be able to meet like-minded people, ask questions, share experiences and consider how they can progress to further leadership opportunities! (Food provided)

Become a Language Assistant!

Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union:

This opportunity takes place until 27 May 2016 at Bradfield School. Closing date for applications is 08 Jan.
Are you keen to use your language skills and gain valuable classroom experience whilst studying at University? As a Language Assistant volunteer you will be placed in a local Secondary school where you will support teachers in the classroom environment. Your role will include providing support to children who need extra help with their languages, assisting class teachers with lesson activities and acting as an all-round positive model of a languages student to inspire and engage young people.
You will be directed by a class tutor and have the chance to work with children in either a one-to-one or group basis. Volunteers will be working in a range of Secondary school classes and depending on their ability, A-Level classes as well. Volunteers will need to be competent in Spanish or French.
