Christmas Festival

Thursday 4 and Friday 5 December

Get into the Christmas spirit at this free event.

Students, staff and local suppliers will be selling Christmas crafts, treats, hot food, mulled wine and mince pies. You can also get involved in Christmas-themed workshops and if you bring along a new gift (unwrapped) for a child aged between 0-16 it will be donated to the NSPCC.

Everyone welcome.

The Pizza Game – ICE CLUB XTRA

Our ICE CLUB XTRA sessions are open to all students who want to improve their employability skills.

This is a fun business simulation game where in small teams you will be running a virtual Pizza Takeaway business.

You will be asked to make decisions on all aspects of the business including the price and quality of your pizza and its marketing strategy.

You are warmly invited to this fascinating talk by local business man and Sheffield Hallam graduate Jonathan Drury. Jonathan is the Managing Director of Savvy Foods which produce an exciting luxury range of pure and energy promoting spreads.

Jonathan is coming to Sheffield Hallam University to talk about his career to date and to give a candid insight into his business covering marketing, logistics and product development.

Social – there are lots of social activities coming up including the story behind Bonfire Night and After Dark as well as experiencing British Culture. Trips include the Beatles Museum at Liverpool, and a local basketball game.

Employability –Are you an international student looking for work? Come along to a workshop to get advice on part time jobs or graduate careers.

Are you a Chinese or Indian national on a student visitor visa? If yes, soon you can use this visa to travel to Ireland, find out more information.

If you are interested in working full-time in the UK after you graduate, then ‘Working in the UK after studies’ sessions provide information about Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 5 visa routes.

Masterclass Autumn 2014 – sessions 1 and 2

Masterclass is designed to support students who may be unfamiliar with study at university level, or need to update their skills particularly in independent research and writing.

All students are welcome, but these sessions will be of particular interest to those returning to study or from outside the UK. All sessions will be held on Thursdays. All classes are free, and you only need to come to the specific sessions that interest you.
You must sign up in advance for each Masterclass. The signup sheet will be available in the TESOL Office, Science Park, Unit 3 the week prior to each class.

Masterclass is run by the University English Scheme (UES). For more information on these or other UES classes please come to the TESOL offices, Science Park, Unit 3, or e-mail ues@shu.ac.uk

Session 1 – Getting more from your lectures: how to improve your note-taking and revision skills.

Note-taking in lectures can be a challenge when you start studying at university; how do you keep up, know what to write and what to leave out, and what do you do with your notes after the lecture?

This session will offer some note-taking tips and tricks to improve your work in the lecture, and discuss how to revise your notes after class and prior to exams to get the most from your lectures.

Session 2 – Avoiding plagiarism: how to paraphrase and reference correctly.

Plagiarism is a very serious issue at university.

This session will show you how to avoid plagiarism by working on how to paraphrase the words of others more effectively, and how to correctly reference your sources using the SHU Harvard referencing system.

Omani Cultural Event and Fashion Show

Hajar Alruzeiqi is a Msc Managing Global Business Student at Sheffield Hallam University and a fashion designer in her home country of Oman. She has designed many beautiful clothes and will be displaying her designs at a FREE event at Sheffield Hallam University.

Come along to see her gorgeous designs in a fashion show and find out a little bit about the country of Oman and its culture.

Snacks and drinks will be served after the event.
