New home for SHU’s Institute of Education

The Sheffield Hallam University Institute of Education has a new home – Charles Street!

Built as a home for teaching courses from early years through to higher education – at every level from foundation degree to post-doctoral – it’ll act as a hub for excellence, innovation and knowledge advancement.

It offers a dedicated, modern space for our teaching students to learn and interact, helping to provide an exciting environment for our teachers of the future to flourish.

Check out the video below for a sneaky peak and interviews with key members of the IoE:

Daredevil tightrope walker visits SHU

On 11 March, Sheffield Hallam University played host to Sarah Rixham, a Sheffield-born tightrope walker and current world record holder for the longest female highline, for a special feat between two SHU buildings.

Having travelled the world highlining some of the world’s most beautiful and risky locations, Sarah returned to Sheffield to help promote outdoor activities in the area, and to highline the best place of all: SHU!

Sarah said: “It’s a very special experience for me to finally get to highline in the city my slackline journey started.”

Check out the video below to see how she got on, it’s a nailbiter!

Student Rep Awards – Nominations Open!

Every year, Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union likes to recognise the fantastic work that our student reps do acting as the link between students and their respective faculties.

The Awards are designed to show appreciation for reps who have gone above and beyond, engaging with students to communicate any concerns or feedback that they may have about their course and relaying any information from faculty staff effectively. Our student reps act as a voice for the student population and provide an important bridge between teaching staff and SHU students.

You can nominate student reps from each faculty; someone who you feel has made the biggest impact across groups, societies and departments; as well as academic and support staff who you think deserve recognition.

Nominations for the awards are open now, and can be found here.

Medal haul for SHU students at university championships

Every year, British Universities and Colleges Sports organises its annual championship and this year part of it was held at the English Institute for Sport in Sheffield, where we sent a team of sports hopefuls.

We had a cracking year this time around, winning a fantastic 11 gold medals, three silvers and four bronzes. Our swimming team won an impressive eight gold medals, with Max Litchfield, who is hoping to go to Rio 2016, even breaking the individual medley record!

“There’s no other city in the country that can rival Sheffield’s sporting pedigree so it was great to be in front of a home crowd.” – Max Litchfield

Sheffield has agreed to host the event for the next three years, so keep an eye out as you could be watching future Olympic champions right on your doorstep!

There are still events this week though, Sheffield will be hosting the BUCS Big Wednesday event on 16 March, for more information, have a look here the event is free, too.

International student Taruka Srivastava – one of the SHU’s Inspirational Women

To mark 8th March, the International Women’s Day, staff and students were invited to nominate Sheffield Hallam women who inspire them. We are delighted that Indian student Taruka Srivastava is in the final list in recognition for her achievements.

Says Andrew Bromley from the International Experience Team:

“I have rarely seen such an active and dedicated student. She is an active member of our ICE CLUB, Culture Connect and regularly attends Conversation Club and other social activities. She has also found part-time work with Disney and secured a prestigious opportunity to work with Manchester United TV station.

Taruka is a positive and enthusiastic person and an inspiration to all who meet her.”

And here’s what Taruka said about her accomplishments:

“It was quite difficult for me to adjust in the beginning. I even wrote to SHU Wellbeing complaining of depression and anxiety attacks. However I was told in Culture Connect that it was normal for an international student to go through such experiences. So I developed a new outlook and motivated myself to make the most out of my time in Sheffield.

I became more involve in my college life and attended conversation clubs which helped me gain many friends. I also got an opportunity to work with Manchester United Football Club TV. Plus I started my blog where I covered lot of local stories and interviewed people. My interview with Sheffield Wednesday Star Jose Semedo got published and I am also invited by Paul Blomfield to visit Parliament in June this year.”

We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Taruka on her fantastic achievement; the dedication and application that she has put in has been brilliant to see.

Scam Alert – targeting International students

Some of our international students are being called by scammers who claim to be from the ‘Home Office’.

The caller says they are from the Home Office and has the students full name, postcode in the UK and passport number, and asks the student to verify those details are correct.  The caller tells the student to go to the www.gov.uk website, and search for Home Office, and then scroll down to the bottom of the screen, so that the student can see that they are calling from the genuine Home Office number.  The caller ID on the student’s mobile, does show this number.

The caller then proceeds to tell the student they have not paid for an immigration service, and as a result have to pay a fine (usually £1200 – £1520), or else they will be reported to the Police/or the Home Office who will detain them or deport them.

The caller becomes increasingly insistent and verbally aggressive, and as they have so much personal information about the student, the student often feels so pressured and terrified, that they pay up.

The calls seem to particularly target students from India and Sri Lanka.

BEWARE – This is a very sophisticated scam! If they were to call you and you challenge their authenticity they may tell you to Google their phone number and verify their identity. Even the caller ID they use is the same as Home Office switch board number. They will have manipulated the electronics, webpages and links to deceive you. They can be very forceful and authoritative in their tone, even more so if they sense that you are scared.

British Police or Home Office never contact students in this manner, and they never ask for money over the phone.

If you receive a call of this nature, please do not give out any personal details (passport number, address, family details). Please do not download any software they ask you to on your phone or computer. Cut the phone and inform the police immediately. If you are unsure, please feel free to contact International Experience Team on internationalexperience@shu.ac.uk or call us on 0114 225 3813.
