Trip to York

Popular with local and international tourists, York is one of the most historic cities in the UK. Among its many attractions are the famous castle, minster and many museums including the National Railway Museum.

There is so much to see and do in York, including taking a walk down the Shambles, (a medieval shopping street dating back to the 14th Century), the gruesome dungeons or getting afternoon tea at the famous Bettys tea room.

The trip will cost £10 and tickets will be available from the Student Services Reception on Level 5 of the Owen building after 7 June.

It is on Saturday 11 June and will start at 8am. Meet our student crew at the main University entrance.

Hallam Award

The Hallam Award is the Students’ Union skills award that recognises and rewards students who have developed their skills through extra-curricular activities within the Students’ Union, university and in the community.

The Hallam Award is designed to help you reflect on the transferable skills you have developed that will help you in your future career aspirations and beyond – for information about how to get nominated yourself, go to the page here for more information.

As nominations for this end soon (it closes on 10 June!), we thought we’d catch up with one of our past winners, Guinevere Chan, from Hong Kong, to find out how easy it is to apply and what she got out of winning the award. We asked her the following questions:

1. How much work was involved in applying and the process?

Applying for Hallam Award does not really involve a lot of work. Mainly I was asked to write a self-reflection on a range of skills that I have developed during my voluntary work experience at SHU.

2. What is involved in the award? (did you have to attend many meetings etc.)

There were many workshops available for students who are interested in applying for a Hallam Award. There are introduction sessions as well as self-reflection workshops but they are voluntary. Students can choose to attend these meetings according to their needs.

3. How has the award helped with your employability?

I would say the award has definitely improved my CV as it was a recognised achievement. However, the most rewarding part is that the application process really got me to evaluate and reflect on the skills that I have developed, and how these skills could be transferred to my future career.

4. Would you recommend the Award to other international students?

I would highly recommend the Award to anyone at Hallam. If you are already involved in any kind of voluntary work such as a course rep, Culture Connect mentor/mentee or student society committees, you are already eligible to have your contribution recognised!

5. Do you have any other advice or information?

An extra tip is to keep a reflective diary along your journey. It does not need to be a lot of writing, just note down some thoughts of self-development; it will go a long way. This will definitely help you to write the final report!

Many thanks for Guinevere for sharing her experiences; if you are interested in applying for the award, the take a look here to find out more.

International Experience Team shortlisted for Student Services honour

Although we’re a modest bunch here at GoGlobal, we do like to highlight the accolades that we get for our work sometimes!

We’re not in it for the glamour or fame, we really just like to help and support our students, but it’s nice to get some recognition for the fantastic work that the International Experience Team does.

We have been shortlisted for the Outstanding Student Services Team award from the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards 2016; it is based on our GoGlobal campaign (such as this blog, and our Facebook page), our engagement with our students on campus and abroad, as well as the support that we give students on a day-to-day basis, making them feel at home while they study here.

The ceremony will take place on Thursday 23 June, so wish us good luck!

For more in the awards and the other nominees, check out the THE website here.

Art Sheffield: Up Down Top Bottom Strange & Charm

Art Sheffield 2016 is a citywide contemporary art event, curated this year by Martin Clark, Director of Bergen Kunsthall, Norway. It takes as its starting point the political, social, cultural, and material histories of the city of Sheffield, enacted and explored through a carefully selected group of international video, film and sound works, as well as three major new commissions made especially for the exhibition by three British artists.

The title of the exhibition, Up, Down, Top, Bottom, Strange and Charm is taken from the six flavours (or types) of quark: the elementary particles that make up every atom, and the fundamental building blocks of matter.

There is a fantastic programme of events happening around the city, from film screenings to gallery tours, so check out the links here and here;  see if there’s anything that tickles your art fancy!

BBC Get Inspired will be laying on a range of free sporting activities in and around the Winter Garden from Friday, 1 May – Monday, 4 May, including a climbing wall and a virtual cycle of the Tour de Yorkshire.

The main event though is definitely the high-quality, exciting snooker that’s on show. You can either get tickets for the Crucible and watch all the action live on the baize or follow it on the big screens in Tudor Square, cheering on your favourite player.
