Sharrow Festival

A community festival which celebrates the talents and diversity of the area, including sport activities and performances from talented local people.

The Sharrow Festival comprises of the Festival Day in the Park – a full day of activity in Mount Pleasant Park held on the first Saturday in July – and the Festival Fringe, which is a host of community activities in Sharrow in the weeks either side of the Day in the Park.

The festival is a flagship event in Sharrow which celebrates the culture and diversity of the area, providing opportunites for thousands of local people to experience a wonderful day in Mount Pleasant Park.

Admission to the festival is free of charge and is open from 12-8pm.

EU students studying at SHU

All current EU students should be reassured that their studies will not be affected by the EU referendum outcome. The UK exit negotiations are likely to take at least two years and possibly longer and until then all EU citizens are still entitled to:

> EU student status – you will not be subject to immigration controls and will not require a visa to study in the UK
> Home/EU tuition fee status – you will continue to pay the same fees you are paying at the moment
> Access to tuition fee loans – EU nationals or their family members, currently in higher education, and who are assessed as eligible to receive loans and/or grants from the SLC, will continue to receive these loans and grants until they finish their course. This includes loans to cover tuition fees (for those resident in the EEA for three years), loans and grants for maintenance (limited to those resident in the UK for at least three years), and some other grants and allowances.
> Access to EU grants – If your studies are funded by Erasmus+, or any other European programme, you will continue receiving your funding.

Study Skills Sessions: Maths Help

We at SHU GoGlobal understand that this can be a stressful time of year with resits coming up. But never fear! The Bridge (just above the Adsetts Library café) is holding some Maths Help drop-in sessions to support you with any queries you might have before your exams.

All sessions will be 11.30am – 1.30pm and the dates are:

Monday 11th July
Thursday 14th July
Friday 15th July

There’s no need to book, so just pop in!

Refugee Week – events across the city

Refugee Week takes place every year across the world in the week around World Refugee Day on the 20 June. In the UK, Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.

To celebrate, Sheffield will have a variety of events and performances across the city – a majority of which are free or pay what you decide – from artists who have refugee background and links.

There is the Migration Matters Festival which is being held at Theatre Delicatessen on the Moor, which will feature established companies, emerging artists, community arts groups and charitable organisations. There are also live performances and exhibitions from artsONtheRUN, featuring six local artists from migrant backgrounds – click here to find out more.

Trip to Manchester/Manchester United

Join us for a trip to Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, the biggest football club in the world.

Imagine yourself as Jose Mourinho in the dugout, visit the trophy room and sit by the peg of your favourite player in the dressing room.

After the tour, we will head to Manchester city centre with its wide range of shops and leisure attractions.

The cost of the trip will be £20, and tickets can be bought online at store.shu.ac.uk or from Student Services, Level 5 Owen Building, City Campus.

Walk in the Peak District

Sheffield is well known for being a beautiful place to live and visit, but did you know that it is also the greenest city in Europe?

With that in mind, we thought it’d be a fantastic idea to take a trip to the Peak District and walk around some of the most scenic landscapes that the UK has to offer.

We would recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes, a picnic and waterproof clothes – although it’s the summer, it can sometimes rain!

One of our British students will lead the walk, and you will need to meet them at 9.30am on Sunday 22 January outside the main University entrance. This event is free of charge.

Student Profile: Amy Ng

We asked Amy Ng, a student from Hong Kong studying Molecular and Cell Biology, to tell us a bit about her time at Sheffield Hallam, and how she adapted to living in England as a Chinese student.

“As a new student, I felt very welcomed by the friendly staff and my coursemates at Sheffield Hallam and have quickly made many friends from all over the world through the social activities organised by the International Experience Team. I have also joined the International Career Enhancement (ICE) Club as a crew member.

The International Experience Team is very supportive to all crew members and offer us briefings, training sessions and ICE Club Xtra events which ranges from seminars by business leaders to business simulation activities. As a result, I have brushed up on my customer service skills and multicultural awareness, and have enjoyed the time working with and learning from local and International students.

Joining recreational clubs such as SHU Canoe Club and working as a student crew member for ICE Club have helped me gain confidence in interacting with friends from all over the world and working in a diverse environment.  In Sheffield Hallam, you will receive a lot of support for your aspirations.  This is the place for you to transform yourself!”

Staff Exchange Programme

From Monday 23 May, the International Experience Team hosted guests from all across Europe, including delegates from Spain, Poland and the Czech Republic for a week of Internationalising Student Support; they visited for a five day programme of seeing how the University supports students, as well as to learn about Sheffield itself.

There were talks from support services across the University, tours of the campuses and even some local Sheffield dialect! We had a fantastic time learning from each other and hearing how our cultures differed, leading to some lively debate on how best to  support and communicate with our students while they are studying.

The week was a great success and we’d like to think that our Erasmus visitors got as much out of the exchange as we did; hopefully we’ll get to go across to the continent and see how things work in their countries in the near future!

Hallam Award – Final Deadline

The Hallam Award is the Students’ Union skills award that recognises and rewards students who have developed their skills through extra-curricular activities within the Students’ Union, university and in the community.

The Hallam Award is designed to help you reflect on the transferable skills you have developed that will help you in your future career aspirations and beyond.

If you’ve been a part of SHU Fest, Culture Connect, ICE Club, Global Friends or any other SHU GoGlobal scheme, then you can apply! Even if you’re studying abroad at one of our partner institutions, you can also apply!
