The new £27m teaching and learning facility at Collegiate Campus reached a key stage in its development in September 2013. The University held a topping-out ceremony with eastates and facilities director Mark Swales, project manager Dave Furniss, Mechanical Engineering Services lead Lee Allen and Student Union president Howard Duffy. Representatives from GRAHAM construction, who are building the new Heart of the Campus development, were also there to mark the occasion. The building has now reached its highest point of three storeys, a significant reduction from its predecessor Marshall Hall which towered at seven storeys.
The new building, planned to be completed by autumn 2014, will include a new café, teaching spaces, staff accommodation and social learning spaces. The building will be 7,200 square metres in size and will mainly be used by students and staff from the University’s Faculty of Development and Society and Faculty of Health and Wellbeing. The development also includes space for the Students’ Union, enabling them to better support students on both campuses.
Mark Swales, director of estates and facilities said, ‘This building will give our students high-quality, innovative teaching and learning facilities, but it will also create a true heart, where students can come together. The building will be sympathetic to the heritage of this picturesque conservation area, but will increase the amount of student-focused space that we have at Collegiate Campus.’
Michael Graham, executive chairman of GRAHAM Construction said, ‘We have reached an important milestone in delivering this state-of-the-art facility which will play a vital role in the future of the Collegiate Campus. Now that the building has reached its highest point, people can get a sense of how this innovative hub at the heart of the University grounds is taking shape as we progress to completion.’ Children at the Sheffield Hallam Nursery entered a national competition (Ivor Goodsite) to design a hoarding and were awarded second place. you can see the hoarding they designed on a previous blog post.
