The Highly Skilled Employment Commitment (HSE) includes the following components:

  1. Work Experience
  2. Digital Skills
  3. Career Readiness
  4. Graduate Attributes

These 4 components were a direct result of primary consultation with students, employers, academics and secondary research of competitors and sector specialists.

The 2017 Employability Plan established a basis for how this has grown, and continues to be strengthened in faculties through the Employability Partnership Agreements (EPAs).  We continue to work within our Employability Promise (a service level commitment) that every student will be prepared for highly skilled employment or further study upon graduation – delivered through an innovative, impactful and consistent employability offer.

Each component part will be brought to life at every level of a course in a way that best meets the needs of that course and their students.  Our students will be career ready.  They will be exposed to employers in a safe and supported way. They will also develop their networks, apply their learning through a placement, be able to articulate their graduate attributes and have a series of digital skills. Hallam graduates will stand out from the crowd and employers will want to employ our graduates.

HSE Handbook – A Step Change (Staff Handbook)
HSE Handbook provides an outline of the commitment and a course review.

Overview and Actions
Courses should review what is meant by each component part (Work Experience, Digital skills, Career Readiness and Graduate Attributes).  This information can be found in the documents entitled ‘HSE – Overview and Actions’ for each component part.

Documents can be downloaded for each component in the themed sections below.

Course Review
Teams should then evaluate their courses through the completion of the Course Review.  The purpose of this is to appraise the HSE commitments against their current course and identify how/if/where they meet the requirements of the commitment along with identification of what changes need to be made.

Deadline
Each Course review should be completed and emailed to the correct email address or before Friday 1st March 2019

Work Experience

In order to be the world’s leading applied university, we need to enable our students to connect with employers allowing them to apply their course knowledge and best articulate their experiences, learning and skill development.  All work experience will be relevant and meaningful with the level of challenge increasing incrementally through each level of study.

Digital Skills

The University is committed to supporting digital skills and developing a clear and consistent digital learning programme through the curriculum as well as through institutional initiatives, services and university-wide interventions and events. Developing a digital skills and learning pathway has many benefits to the students’ learning and employability.

Digital Skills in Practice ensures that students have the necessary skills to effectively use different software, apps, tools and websites to facilitate learning, working and engaging with personal and social interests as well as developing a critical awareness around their own professional and personal, digital learning and identity.

Career Readiness

The Career Readiness pathway of our new Employability Offer will provide Sheffield Hallam students with a personalised and impactful programme, equipping them with career management and employability skills to create their own future success by supporting the transition through levels and into highly skilled employment.

Career Readiness ensures that work experience makes sense to students. It will build upon the existing good practice which is already embedded in many courses and therefore may not involve significant changes to courses where preparation for work experience, career management and/or employability skills development is already fully integrated and accessible at every level.

Quality Assurance

Course Teams will need to work with their departmental employability leads, quality Lead and LTA Lead, to meet the requirements of the Highly Skilled Employment (HSE) commitment.  This guide is designed to provide a clear overview of the ‘quality process’ supporting HSE. In the first instance please direct your queries to those in your department/faculty identified as supporting this key University initiative.

Equality and Diversity / Widening Participation (Guidance)

Supporting students with protected characteristics to access work experience and placements.
When meeting the objectives of the Highly Skilled Employment Project, Sheffield Hallam University will need to ensure compliance with the Equality Act 2010 for people with protected characteristics engaging in education and work. Students from a widening participation background should also be considered within this process.
