Prof. Alessandro Di Nuovo is Professor of Machine Intelligence at Sheffield Hallam University. He is the leader of technological and digital innovations for independent lives for the Advanced Wellbeing Research Institute. He is with the Department of Computing, where is leading the Smart Interactive Technologies (SIT) Research Laboratory, which is conducting internationally renowned research in interdisciplinary applications of machine intelligence, including healthcare and well-being. Prof. Di Nuovo has an extensive track record of leading interdisciplinary research and innovation. Prof. Di Nuovo has been leading projects in fundamental and applied topics in AI and Robotics, funded by public (EU H2020, EPSRC), private (IBM, NVIDIA) and charities (Sheffield Children’s Hospital).
Currently, ADN is a lead scientist (SHU PI) of the H2020 MSCA-ITN European Training Network on PErsonalized Robotics as SErvice Oriented applications (PERSEO, 2021-24), a multidisciplinary project to train the new generation of interdisciplinary researchers and professionals for the forthcoming market of personal robots. Prof. Di Nuovo was the PI of the EPSRC project NUMBERS (2017-19), which delivered the first step toward his vision by creating a developmental neurorobotics model of number understanding. The research evidenced similarities between children and robotic embodiment in the early development of numerical cognition (Di Nuovo & McClelland, Nature Machine Intelligence, 2019). In 2019, ADN won IBM SUR Award ($40,000) for a prototype of a robot-led psychological cognitive assessment system powered by the IBM Watson Cloud AI services. ADN coordinated the H2020 MSCA-IF CARER-AID (2017-19), which developed an intelligent robotic assistant to support caregivers in early diagnosis and treatment of individuals with autism spectrum disorder associated with intellectual disability, in collaboration with a specialised healthcare provider. Previously, Prof. Di Nuovo was leading the human-robot interaction in the FP7 Large Scale project ROBOT-ERA (2012-15), a multidisciplinary international project concerning the implementation and evaluation of several advanced robotic services for supporting the elderly.
Prof. Di Nuovo serves as Topic Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems (Sage). He is an associate editor of Applied Sciences and Robotics journals (MDPI). He served as associate editor for Cognitive System Research (Elsevier) and as lead guest editor for special issues in the IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems, the International Journal of Social Robotics, and Adaptive Behavior journal.
Prof. Di Nuovo is the Finance Chair of the 2020 IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN), he was Publication Chair of 2017 IEEE Conference of IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems (FUZZ-IEEE), General Chair of the 10th International Workshop on Hybrid Metaheuristics (HM 2016), General Chair, IEEE RO-MAN 2014 Workshop on New Frontiers of service robotics for elderly, and General Chair, SAB 2012 Workshop on Artificial Mental Imagery in Cognitive Systems and Robotics. He also serves as Programme Committee Member for many renowned conferences, e.g. FUZZIEEE, IEEE IJCNN, IEEE SMC, IEEE ICDL-Epirob, ACM/IEEE HRI among many others. For his service, in 2014, he was awarded the status of Senior Member of the IEEE.
