Who was your favourite teacher?

We all had one. You probably still remember them, I certainly do. In fact, my Y5 teacher was the reason I decided to train as a Primary School teacher myself.

Whether they were kind, creative or humorous, motivated you to go further than you ever though you could or influenced your future career choice, there’s no doubt that teachers, in some way, have impacted all of our lives.

Teaching is a challenging career, now more than ever. The hours are long, pupil numbers are increasing, the curriculum and student assessment is continuously changing and budgets are being cut. However, teaching is also a rewarding occupation. They impart knowledge, facilitate learning, inspire, motivate and care.

At Sheffield Hallam we are proud to have an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating for our Primary and Early Years Initial Teacher Training courses, with ‘Good’ grades across our Secondary and Further Education provision. We support our students to become the inspiring and knowledgeable teachers of the future.

There are well over 400,000 teachers currently supporting more than 8.2 million students in schools across England, including Nurseries, Primary and Secondary Schools, Special Schools, Pupils Referral Units and Independent schools. Teachers make a huge difference and that’s something to celebrate.

In 2018, Teacher Appreciation week runs from the 7th to 11th of May. This celebratory event, which is often overlooked in the UK, is an opportunity to highlight what an incredible career choice teaching is.

In honour of Teacher Appreciation week, at Sheffield Hallam we have created three new workshops for Y10 to Y13 students in the following areas:

  • Primary and Early Years Education
  • Education Studies
  • Childhood and Early Childhood

Each session is an hour in length and can be offered individually or together in a carousel format, both in your institution or here at Sheffield Hallam. The sessions cover the relevant course offer here at Hallam, entry requirements, careers and a hands-on insight into a university seminar.

These sessions would be suitable for students who are currently studying similar subjects, are interested in working with children and young people or are still undecided about their plans after college or sixth form.

These sessions will be available from the 7th of May and beyond. To book any of these new taster session for your students or to find out more, send me an email at k.l.deakin@shu.ac.uk
