March is always an extremely busy time for Schools and College Engagement at Hallam, and 2017 has been one of the busiest.

A highlight this year has been our Art and Design Masterclass Week and Teachers Evening, which ran from the 22nd to the 24th of March.

Masterclasses are in-depth, academic led sessions that offer A level, BTEC and foundation students a chance to get hands-on with an aspect of Art and Design.

Students are guided through a 90 minute/2 hour workshop, taking in the theory and practice of a specific course area, and given the chance to experiment with materials/mediums they may not be familiar with.

During the week, we gave over 100 students from 9 different institutions the opportunity to experience these sessions within the dedicated Art and Design space, Sheffield Institute of Art (SIA) on Flat Street.

Taking in Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Product Design, Metalwork & Jewelry, Interior Design and Fashion Management over the week, all areas of Art and Design Study were covered as part of the event visit- a first for us!

Similarly, we also used the week to open up SIA’s doors to teachers, in the form of a networking evening. Including presentations from academics and current SIA students, the evening aimed to give a flavour of what it means to study an art or design degree at Hallam, as well as showcase our excellent facilities.

We had attendees from 6 different institutions, and the event provided an ideal platform to showcase what we as Schools and College Engagement can offer.

Our next Masterclass week will take place in June, during the Graduate Degree show. If you would like to find out more about this event please contact Dom Kitchen; dominic.kitchen@shu.ac.uk.
