Workshop session 1
Mind the Gap: Planning for an Advanced Practice Role. Marcia Smoke; Juravinski Cancer Centre, Hamilton, Canada
This Workshop focussed on how to use an evidence-based approach to develop and implement AP roles.
At the end of this workshop participants will have an understanding of
- How to determine the need for a New Model of Care.
- The key components of a toolkit used to develop advanced practice roles.
- How to select candidates.
Workshop session 2
Overcoming barriers to undertaking research. Prof Heidi Probst; Sheffield Hallam University and Dr Rachel Harris; College of Radiographers, UK
This workshop covered the following topics:
- Why research is important for Advanced practitioners,
- Getting started with research, where to start, the research process and tips for getting a research project off the ground,
- Reviewing the research evidence and undertaking critical appraisal and
- Top tips on getting published, where to start, planning your writing, and choosing where to publish.
This session was a mix of short presentations, group discussions and activities. Participants undertook two pre-workshop activities:
- Consider a clinical problem in your area of practice that you feel would benefit from research; discuss the topic with colleagues and your manager, what are their views? Bring your ideas with you to the workshop.
- Participants will be asked to read and critically appraise a research article (the article reference will be given to you in advance) ahead of the event. In the workshop we will debate the strengths and weaknesses of the research design.
The article is (Bokhour et al., 2001) and participants used the qualitative research checklist (Tong et al., 2007) both free to access online.

Workshop session 3
The Benefits of Accreditation. Louise Coleman, College of Radiographers, UK
This was an interactive workshop and by the end of the session participants were able to
- Map their own practice to the four core functions of higher level practice.
- Discuss the benefits of accreditation with regards to patients, employer and practitioner.
- Evaluate accreditation with respect to career development and enhancement.
- Start their advanced practitioner accreditation application.

Workshop session 4
Not forgetting the patient. Spencer Goodman; Professional Officer for Radiotherapy, College of Radiographers, UK
While the overall reported cancer patient experience may be relatively good there can be significant variation across different population groups. This workshop focussed on the opportunities and challenges of realising the ambition of patients and radiographers working together as joint partners in care while placing patient experience on an equal footing with other outcomes.
