Sheffield’s Pink Triangle
January 27, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
To commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on Sunday 27th January 2019 SAYiT will be running an event to remember those who lost their lives and were imprisoned during the holocaust, with a particular focus on our LGBT+ family.
To mark the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, the largest Nazi Death camp, we are installing a large pink triangle, the emblem chosen by the Nazis to identify ‘homosexuals’.
Between 5000-15000 individuals were captured and kept in concentration camps, branded with this pink triangle. Prisoners wearing a pink triangle were harshly treated, even by other prisoners. From the concentration camps most were sent to prison, as homosexuality was illegal, they received no compensation upon their release and were not included in the trials of the Nazis. No one has ever been prosecuted for the brutality they faced.
