Fear, Outrage, Love & Hope: Protecting LGBT+ rights in Africa & the Middle East
Dr Rebecca Wright, Senior Lecturer in Human Rights at SHU, International Human Rights Lawyer
Want to know more about the reality of protecting LGBT+ rights across Africa and the Middle East? Want to hear first-hand accounts of the discrimination faced by LGBT+ people, including the people she’s met and the legal battles fought?
Dr. Rebecca Wright has worked for a number of years in Cairo for an Egyptian NGO called “The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights” which aimed in part to promote rights around sexual orientation and gender identity. During this time in Egypt, Rebecca established and ran a strategic litigation initiative spanning North Africa. She has also worked and lived in countries including Lebanon, Syria and Afghanistan. Rebecca will aim in her talk to “bring alive” the reality of campaigning around LGBT+ issues in various African and Middle Eastern countries. She will describe some of the brave individuals she has worked with and some of the complexities that arise for people who choose to bring a legal case. She will also ask the audience to have a (brief!) look at some (simple!) law and ask for views about the benefits and limits of a legal approach to rights protection.
