This seminar and discussion is part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science and will explore what we understand about LGBT young people and the kinds of support they might need, drawing on a number of social science research projects that have consulted both young people and practitioners. Previous studies, for example, suggest that some methods of supporting young LGBT people, such as via counselling, can be seen by LGBT young people as ‘pathologising’ and/or apportioning ‘blame’.

The event will give participants a chance to enhance their knowledge and understanding of LGBT young people and the kinds of support they might need. Social science research will be presented in an informal environment, helping to generate thought and discussion between all those with an interest in this area, with a view to informing future practice.

It will begin informally at 4pm with refreshments, during which time participants are encouraged to view and discuss the visual materials on display. This will be followed at 4.30pm by the talks, before a short break and then an informal discussion/workshop to discuss the issues.

Speakers include:

·         Eleanor Formby (Sheffield Hallam University) and Jo Woodiwiss (University of Huddersfield) discussing their current research on approaches to supporting LGBT young people in England and Sweden

·         Catherine Donovan (University of Sunderland) speaking on ‘Young LGB and/or T people and sex and relationships education: Making the case for youth work’

·         Jen Slater (Sheffield Hallam University) talking about their research project, ‘Around the toilet’, which explores the toilet as a place of exclusion and belonging
