LeanPrint Pilot FAQs

What is LeanPrint?

LeanPrint is a piece of software supplied by Adobe which helps you save the amount of ink and paper used when printing. We are testing it for a few months in the University to see whether the savings are significant enough for it to be worth investing in long term for staff printing at the University.

Why are we piloting it at Sheffield Hallam?

The University is committed to improving the environmental impact of our printing and would like to explore whether savings could be made by using this software which would make the investment worthwhile.

How long will the pilot last?

We have negotiated a 3 month trial for as many people who would like to use it. Within this period, any member of staff can ask to try the software. When the pilot period has ended, the University will assess the savings which have been made by using LeanPrint an decide whether we should invest in the software.

Will using LeanPrint mean a big change in the way I print?

Only if you want it to. Once the software has been installed, when you select print, you will be offered the choice to print through LeanPrint or print conventionally. If you choose to print using LeanPrint, you will see a preview of how your document will look using the settings LeanPrint thinks are optimal for saving paper. If you don’t like the way the document looks you can either adjust the settings or select conventional printing.

What happens if I don’t like the software, can I have it removed from my computer?

While the software is being piloted, you can ask for the software to be uninstalled if you don’t like it. You could also choose to print conventionally and you won’t see the LeanPrint settings.

Will I be saving ink as well as paper

Yes. Although in financial terms, the University mainly saves money on the paper (because we pay our printing suppliers per page printed rather than for the toner we use), from a sustainability angle, cutting down on the amount of ink used greatly reduces the environmental impact of printing.

How will I be able to tell what savings I am making?

When you select print preview within the LeanPrint software, there is a small box at the bottom of the screen which shows the savings for the document you are printing.Or you can select the My Savings tab at the top of the screen to see the savings you’ve made since the software was installed.
