Further information for Chinese students about the corona virus outbreak

I’ve just returned from Wuhan, should I stay at home for 14 days before returning to classes?

  • If you have returned from Wuhan in the last 14 days, please stay indoors and avoid contact with other people and phone NHS 111 to inform them of your recent travel to the city. Then follow their advice. Please refer to the questions and answers below for guidance about your studies

  • If you have been elsewhere in China, please continue attending classes as standard but if you start feeling poorly, please follow the advice from the leaflet

I went home for the holidays and I am unable to return due to a quarantine in China… OR I have returned but I am quarantined in Sheffield…

…Will my visa be affected?

If you are a Tier 4 student continuing studies, it is unlikely that your visa will be affected. If you have any questions about your Authorised Absence request, please contact you Student Support Adviser. You will need to keep in touch with the University and return as soon as the quarantine is lifted.

…Will I be able to continue studying?

Although you will not be able to attend lectures, you should be able to access Blackboard and the library gateway with your SHU login. You should also be able to submit assignments as standard. If you need to arrange an extension for your assignment complete the online extension request form.  The standard extension period is 5 days, if this is still presenting challenges for you in your current situation please contact your student support adviser in the first instance. If you have missed a number of taught sessions/ seminars please contact your academic advisor for advice on how you best to continue your studies.

… I can’t attend my exam/ other assessment activities because I am still in China? What do I need to do?

You will need to submit a RRAA using the online form . Any question please speak your Student Support Adviser, who will advise on the best options for you.

…I have been on Authorised Absence for too long, and now I’ve been advised to take a break in study and return next year. Will my accommodation fees (rent) be reimbursed?

If you have already signed a tenancy agreement for your accommodation it will be for a set period and you will need confirmation from your landlord that they will release you from your obligations. Your tenancy agreement is not a university owned document so you should contact your accommodation provider, landlord or residence manager to discuss your tenancy agreement as soon as possible

… I am unable to submit my assignment.  What do I need to do?

Depending on circumstance you will need to use the online form to submit an extension request or submit a RRAA. Any issues please contact you Student Support Adviser.

…I am unable to attend the Tier 4 registration. What do I need to do?

Make your Student Support Adviser aware if you are unable to attend
