Introducing Jennifer Harris, a senior student in the Sino British College on the SHU Business course. Jennifer is considered one of the top students in her class and has a story well worth sharing.
Jennifer has been volunteering with a non-profit organisation, Stepping Stones, where she teaches English to migrant children. The migrant population is rapidly increasing in Shanghai. Children move with their parents to become temporary residents; however, they are unable to be admitted to normal Chinese schools because of registration issues.
For a whole semester, she had taught two classes to second grade students every week at Tangshan School.
From her experience, Jennifer says,
“We had to create lesson plans and think of activities that we believed would help the students retain the information they had learned. We had them draw up cards for Mother’s Day in which they had to write to their mothers a message in English. Another idea was trying to come up with how we would teach them what the lights on a traffic light meant. It was a unique experience which will stay with me for a long time.
You could see how the students improved; those who had not participated before were now excitedly answering questions and showing what they had learned from the lessons. It was a great opportunity for me to change the lives of these students who do not have the same opportunities as other students in Shanghai.”
Jennifer does incredible work, and her story is truly inspiring!
