The benefits of LICC by Elouise Hearnshaw

This month Elouise speaks to use about some of the recent topics LICC have been key in discussing and one of the very visible benefits you may may have noticed recently.

As we have just had the first of our reinstated BUGS meetings (minutes attached), I thought would bring to you the benefits that LICC has brought to you this year.

To be a staff rep you don’t have to be a Nobel Prize Winner, or a member of Mensa, you need to have 3 things…

  • be an employee of SHU
  • be a member of the Finance and Planning Directorate (staff on fixed term contracts are eligible)
  • have the support of two SHU employees who are and members of the Finance and Planning Directorate

… and finally want to be a key part of the directorate, by having a voice for our staff. So I thought as a new addition to a team and the directorate why not give it a go?

So far this year the LICC have discussed:

  • PSOM
  • Security around Oneleven
  • Health & Safety
  • Financial Performance
  • New ways of working
  • What’s going on in the sector
  • Working conditions and decisions likely to lead to substantial changes at work
  • The All Team Brief and guest speakers we might want to come to talk to us

So far we have achieved?

  • We have provided a channel for staff to communicate about the issues that concern and affect them
  • The rep’s have learnt more about the issues affecting staff and are able to discuss these directly with the senior management team
  • In light of recent communications and feedback from staff within 1-11 in relation to the security challenges faced in the area the following measures are to be introduced to help alleviate concerns:
  • A static evening security presence in the building between 16.15 and 18.15 Monday to Friday for the foreseeable future.
  • The reintroduction of smaller more focused Building User Group Meetings (BUGS).  These meetings will be held at the end of each month starting from October, outcomes will be communicated at the beginning of the next month.
  • A security campaign in the building week commencing 15 October where security staff will be on hand 08.00-09.30 offering personal safety advice to staff as they arrive for work.
  • SHU will be working closely with the Sheffield Business Improvement District fellow Directors and South Yorkshire Police urging Sheffield City Council to create a Public Space Protection Order.

The reinstatement of the Building User Group Meetings (BUGS) and the additional actions are a direct result of feedback from LICC (and others within the building).  This demonstrates the importance of the LICC and the impact that it can make.

We will be having a Finance and Planning Forum in the next couple of weeks, keep an eye out for the invite coming into your diaries ahead of our LICC meeting at the end of the month, you can raise anything with anyone of your staff reps in confidence or at the forum which you would like discussing with FPLT at the LICC meetings.
