What we do

The Bioscience and Chemistry Technical Services provide high-quality teaching and learning support which contributes to and enhances, the student experience at Sheffield Hallam University.

We provide excellent teaching and learning environments through

  • state of the art laboratory facilities with industry standard equipment,
  • safe and clean working areas in line with Health and Safety policies,
  • provision of advice, guidance and specialist demonstrations and a dedicated member of the technical team allocated to every practical class,
  • continuous review and development of the practical programme in collaboration with academic staff to provide research informed teaching,
  • collating and reviewing feedback to continually improve services.

We are a dedicated and skilled technical team who

  • have a broad range of backgrounds, knowledge and experience,
  • are approachable, friendly, and take pride in the delivery of our services,
  • continually develop and improve their skills and knowledge to meet our high standards, and keep abreast of new technologies and developments,
  • procure and maintain industry standard equipment and materials,
  • use a quality management system to provide a consistent student experience.

We are committed to ensuring Health and Safety standards by

  • risk assessment of our activities,
  • providing fire marshals and qualified first aiders,
  • carrying out regular health and safety audits and housekeeping checks.
  • the procurement and storage of chemicals in line with COSHH regulations.
  • providing appropriate PPE for all activities.

We need you to

  • be respectful and courteous to staff and students,
  • abide by Health and Safety Guidelines,
  • have respect for the working environment and equipment,
  • ask for advice and support when you need it,
  • arrive punctually and prepared for every practical session,
  • share your voice and provide us with feedback,
  • give reasonable time frames for us to respond to your requests.
