Service Sector Management short placements

The placements run between Monday 15 November and through to Friday 08 April, typically for up to 120 hours. Keen in this sector to be face-to-face but can be virtual or hybrid. The aim of the work experience project activities are to develop the following:

What employability skills should level 5 students develop during their work experience?

  • Social skills: communication skills with a strong customer focus, such as speaking, presentation skills, writing and body language; working with others as part of a team; customer service skills; networking skills
  • Organisational skills: planning and coordination, prioritising, multi-tasking, problem solving, decision making, time management
  • Technical skills: specific to the job; IT skills including digital skills such as applying different tools in professional practice, e.g. use of Excel to interpret financial data or industry trends; application of online social networking and media skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability skills: enthusiasm to work unsociable hours such as nights and weekends; ability to work with people from different backgrounds
  • Multitasking skills: ability to juggle different tasks simultaneously, while completing each assigned task; ability to work to deadlines
  • Cultural awareness: ability to be culturally aware to deal with people of different nationalities and backgrounds
  • Commercial awareness

Proposed types of activity/project briefs:

The work experience should ideally relate to the course that the student is studying, the sort of projects that may suit students working individually or as a project team could include:

  • Market analysis and proposals
  • Developing a marketing plan for a business
  • Developing / enhancing the online / social media communications strategy and presence for a business
  • Organise, market and run online events
  • Planning for events post COVID-19
  • Develop proposals for the redesign of customer service / operating models post COVID-19
  • Production planning, recipe management and costing
  • Nutritional analysis, developing nutrition resources or wellbeing education/promotional materials
  • Identify potential funding opportunities to support growth or change, understand organisational requirements and develop funding applications
  • Working within any charity organisation
