University English Scheme

Students choose from a range of free modules, workshops and classes to help develop academic English for undergraduate and postgraduate study. Classes and workshops run over the course of the semester in Arundel building, room 10212A.  Attendance at weekly sessions is advised, but not a requirement.  View the UES timetable.

You can secure your place by booking through Unihub (click on ‘view workshops’ below), but it’s fine to come along and see if there are places left.

The Language Advisory Service (LAS) offers one-to-one appointments with an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) lecturer to discuss improvements to spoken or written work. The lecturers are able to provide guidance on a range of issues such as text organisation, grammar, vocabulary, argument construction and pronunciation. It should be noted that this is not a proof-reading service.  Follow the ‘view appointments’ link below to access UniHub to view and book a sessions.

The University English scheme Blackboard site includes a wide range of resources for students who want to develop their academic English across a variety of different formats.

For enrolment on this Blackboard site, simply access the university website: http://shuspace.shu.ac.uk. Search for “University English Scheme, follow the information on the first page, click on the “enrol” button and then “submit”.

We also offer a range of Masterclasses.  These stand-alone sessions are open to all, but will be of particular interest to students returning to study or from outside the UK. Session topics include critical reading and writing, effective paraphrasing and referencing, and proofreading strategies. View these here.
