Specialist skills team

Emma Bryant
Learning Advisor – Specialist Skills

I am qualified at Level 7 with a Postgraduate Certificate in Adult Dyslexia Diagnosis and Support, as well as a PGCE in Secondary English and an MA in Education. I have worked at SHU since 2016, supporting skills tutors and providing specialist support for students with neurodiversities.

Over twenty years in education I have been inspired by the many brilliant children and adults I’ve worked with in a broad range of contexts. As a teacher, course leader and examiner in subjects including English, Literacy and Film Studies, it has been a privilege to help learners develop the language and communication skills they need to excel in their studies independently. Finding that skills development was not always prioritised in education, I retrained as a dyslexia specialist and supported dyslexic learners in a prison setting before joining the team at SHU.

I am currently interested in the case for inclusive assessment in HE, and in strategies to help students develop resilience to cope with the stress of learning.

Emma Bryant

I think skills belong at the heart of university study, and am delighted to be part of the Specialist Study Skills team at SHU, working with such talented and interesting students.

I hold an MA in Specific Learning Difficulties, am a British Dyslexia Association approved Specialist Teacher and Specialist Assessor and am an Associate Member of British Dyslexia Association with a Practising Certificate. I also hold my PGCE (HE and FE) with Numeracy and ESOL Teaching Specialisms.

I have worked in inclusive teaching and learning for around 20 years with extensive experience of developing and providing one to one and group specialist support to students with neurodiversities. My work has extended across sectors developing and delivering inclusive practice within a range of institutions.

My current areas of interest include the impact of co-occurrence on learning and how to ensure students maximise their individual strengths to build confidence in transferable skills that can be used in learning and life.
