Whether you are living away from home for the first time or adjusting to life as a mature learner after being in full time employment, managing your money as a student is challenging.
Here’s some essential finance information every new student needs to know, plus information about how to access help and top tips on how to manage your money as a student
- Come prepared – if you can, bring some money with you for the first few weeks as you won’t get your student loan payment straightaway
- Attend your enrolment event – you need to be enrolled to receive your student funding
- Be patient – it can take 3 to 5 working days for your loan to come into your bank account after enrolment
- Don’t blow it all in the first few days – student loans come as block payments, so you need to think about out how long it’s got to last you
- Work out a budget and stick to it – if you need help then take a look at Blackbullion, our online money management resource. Just “Register” using your SHU email address to get started.
- Seek help if you need it – if you have an unexpected financial emergency then there might be something the University can do to help. Contact us to get some advice.
- Reapply early – remember you need to reapply for your student funding every year and can do this as early as February
