University Mental health and Wellbeing Day is an annual event aimed at promoting the mental wellbeing of students and staff in Higher Education settings.

The day also forms part of SHU’s commitment to the Healthy Universities and Time to Change agenda, with a whole institution approach to health and wellbeing.

This year’s theme is ‘Heads Together’, highlighting ideas and resources for supporting peers.  The day is aimed at staff and students so please make time to find out what is happening.

A Wellbeing Fair and workshops will take place at Heart of the Campus, at which SHU support services and local Sheffield organisations will be represented.

Peer Support Resources

If you are unable to attend the day’s events, you may find the following web resources helpful.

If you are experiencing mental health difficulties and wondering how to discuss your situation with friends and family, Time to Change has some great advice here.

Rethink Mental Illness has some valuable tips for supporting a friend or relative with their mental health. This includes information on help available for people who are supporting peers with their mental health difficulties.

The Mind website offers information about supporting people with specific mental health conditions, as well as how to access financial help and other support services.

Help at University

If you are concerned about your mental health, help is available. Speak to your GP or contact the Student Wellbeing Service.

The Student Wellbeing Service can help you manage personal issues that might impact on your studies, and offer a range of options to support you during your time here. Student Wellbeing services are delivered on both campuses.

There are three specialist strands to the Student Wellbeing Service, which are Counselling, Mental Health and Chaplaincy.

Student Wellbeing offers self-help resources, tips for looking after yourself, workshops, 1-1 appointments, guided self-help and e-counselling.

The Student Wellbeing reception is based in the Surrey building on level 1 (next to the Medical Centre) and is open Monday to Friday 8:45am – 5:15pm (open from 10:30am on Tuesdays, till 7pm on Wednesdays during term-time and closing at 4:45pm on Fridays).
