This is the latest in our series of case studies sharing the experiences of current mature students at Sheffield Hallam.

This time we hear from Liz Rawding, who is on the BSc Radiotherapy course in her second year. Liz is also a member of the Mature Students’ Committee and has written some information for us about this new student committee created within the Student’s Union to bring together mature students from across the university.

Over to you Liz…

There are many different societies you can join at the University from tea drinking to parachuting, drama to cheerleading, there’s something for everyone.

Societies are a fantastic way to meet new people, to get involved in an activity you love, try something completely new and develop new skills. You can find out more about Sheffield Hallam’s many societies here.

But sometimes mature students don’t have the free time to meet up and go tea drinking, surf or race classic cars. That’s why we have set up the Mature Students Committee so we can meet up and support ourselves at Uni.

One in five students at SHU on a full time undergraduate course is a mature student, so there are plenty of us out there!

So what does the Mature Students’ Committee do? We listen to all your mature student hopes and fears and offer practical advice on where to go with them.

If you want to say hello, have any questions or issues you can email us on uusmature@my.shu.ac.uk

As a group we rarely hold physical meetings as we have family and study commitments just like all of you do, so the best ways of getting in touch are by email, Facebook or Twitter

We’re all mature students of long standing experience. Two of us are parents, and two of us are going for our second degree, so we’re pretty much experienced with any issues you may come across.

We are Paul Cherry, Steve Hopwood, Liz Rawding and Emily Seaman. It would be great to hear from you, so feel free to get in touch!
