Are you a carer?
Do you spend time looking after or helping a friend, partner or family member due to illness, disability, frailty or addiction? The care you provide may be personal, practical, emotional or supervisory and is unpaid. If this applies to you then you are a carer.
What is Carers Rights Day?
Each year Carers UK hold Carers Rights Day to bring organisations across the UK together to help carers in their local community know their rights and find out how to get the help and support they are entitled to.
Carers Rights Day sees the launch of the latest edition of the Carers Rights Guide which provides a comprehensive and accessible guide to the practical and financial support available for carers.
There is also the Know your Rights guide written by the Carers Trust for all young carers and young adult carers, especially for those aged 8 – 25.
What is Sheffield Hallam doing to mark Carers Rights Day?
Here at Sheffield Hallam, we will have some activities and events taking place on Carers Right Day.
Information stands – there will be stands on Owen Level 5 at City and in Heart of the Campus at Collegiate where you can find out about Carers Rights Day, get information about local carers organisations and discover the wide range of university support services on offer at Sheffield Hallam.
Carers Café – we will be running our second Carers Café event in association with local carers’ services and The University of Sheffield on Friday 20 November. These events are opportunities for carers to share experiences, talk to staff about the support carers are eligible for and discover ways to balance university and home life.
On Friday 20 November we will be going to The University of Sheffield for a quiz and pizza event between 4pm – 6pm. Any carer who is interested in attending can meet us at 3.30pm outside the main entrance to the Heart of the Campus Building at our Collegiate Campus to walk up to the venue together. Or if you prefer to make your own way there, just email guidance@shu.ac.uk and we’ll send you directions. There’s no need to book – simply come along.
‘Know your Rights’ talk – as part of our Carers Café we have organised for staff from local solicitors Irwin Mitchell to come along and speak about carers rights, such as the right to flexible working hours and to an assessment of the support from the council. There will be free Carers Rights Day goodie bags for every carer who attends, including a £30 Spa 1877 treatment voucher.
