27th March to 2nd April is World Autism Awareness Week. Autism (and Asperger Syndrome, a type of autism) affects over 1 in 100 people, which adds up to approximately 700,000 people in the UK. The condition primarily affects the ways in which a person communicates with and relates to others, and to the environments around them. Autism affects both children and adults.
Autism is on a spectrum, with people experiencing the condition in a range of different ways and requiring differing levels of support. You can find out more about autism on the National Autistic Society (NAS) website here and can read some real life stories NAS has collected from people living with autism here.
Local event – SAANS Open Day
1st April 2015
The Sheffield Adult Autism and Neurodevelopmental Service (SAANS) is holding an event on Wednesday 1 April 2015 (11am-2pm) to mark Autism Awareness Week and showcase the service, which has been running for just under a year.
All are welcome to attend.
Please note that SAANS is based at the Michael Carlisle Centre but is accessed via Lyndhurst Road (S11 9BJ) rather than the main site.
SAANS provides assessment, diagnosis and multi-disciplinary interventions for people with an Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC). SAANS also provides a national assessment and diagnostic service as well as follow-up appointments and counselling, subject to agreed funding by the service user’s local Clinical Commissioning Group. More information about SAANS can be found at the following website: http://shsc.nhs.uk/service/sheffield-adult-autism-and-neurodevelopmental-service
