Monday 24 February – Sunday 2 March 2014

Eating Disorders Awareness week is about raising understanding and awareness of eating disorders as well as support that is available in the local area.

Young people are especially vulnerable to eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia and other eating difficulties.  Eating disorders affect around 1.6 million people in the UK, that is 1 in 39 people.

The following services offer advice and support in relation to eating disorders:

  • Syeda www.syeda.org.uk is a registered charity supporting those affected by eating disorders in South Yorkshire.

SYEDA offer a drop-in session on the second Wednesday of the month in the Hubs as part of Welfare Wednesdays and monthly support group sessions (alternating between SHU and University of Sheffield).

What’s happening in SHU?

Information leaflets on eating disorders are available on Student Wellbeing on Level 1 of the Surrey Building. For non-judgmental, confidential support on eating disorders or anything else contact your Faculty Student Support Officer or the Student Advice drop-in.

What’s happening in Sheffield?

From open days to window displays – a number of events will be held in Sheffield to raise awareness during Eating Disorders Awareness Week.

Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC) is working with a number of partner city organisations including South Yorkshire Eating Disorders Association (SYEDA) in a bid to improve understanding, as well as challenge stereotypes and stigma.
