Training and Opportunities: September

Writing for the Conversation

The Conversation is an independent source of news and views, written by the academic and research community. Editors work with university experts to unlock knowledge for use by the wider public – through comment on a topical news story or publication of new research. Holly Squire, from The Conversation, is coming to Hallam on Wednesday 18 September to present to academics about how you can get involved. The session will cover what The Conversation is about, what they are looking for and how you can pitch and write articles for them. Sign up to book your place *Please note that this session is now full due to popular demand, however, future sessions will be available. Please register your interest by emailing the press team*

Equality analysis and inclusive decision-making

Equality, diversity and inclusion are everybody’s responsibility here at Hallam. Through the University’s new Inclusive Decision-Making Toolkit, we can all ensure we spot opportunities to be inclusive in everything we do. A new course is available through Core Portal which walks you through a process called Equality Analysis, gives you hints and tips on inclusive decision-making as well as important information on equality law, to support your decision-making.

Peer- led learning

Are you interested in providing additional support to students? Peer-led learning empowers more senior students to support their junior peers to thrive and make the most of the their time at university.
In addition to academic skills the Skills Team supports the development of Peer-Led Learning across the university by providing guidance to staff and resources and training for student leaders and mentors.

Wellbeing agenda at SHU

Caroline Brooks, Nursery Nurse:

Over the last 18 months I have been increasingly engaged in strategies to support the wellbeing of staff and children in the SHU Nursery. This has drawn me into the mindfulness community in Sheffield and at SHU where John Darwin leads a programme in the Multi-faith centre.

I am studying for a MSc in Mindfulness at the University of Aberdeen, this is an unusual academic and experiential programme that develops personal practice and understanding that can support change in the workplace.

Participants are encouraged to be active and reflective learners and great emphasis is placed on professional action in the workplace setting. Assessments are designed to arise naturally in the workplace and from course work reflecting on mindfulness and its application.

I hope to develop my own skills and practice and that this will inform and impact on the wellbeing strategies applied at SHU.

It would be great to talk to anyone involved in the wider wellbeing agenda at SHU or anyone who has an interest, would like to share ideas or have a chat about it.

If you are interested or would like to know more, please contact Caroline by email or by calling #6687
